Christmas Cactus are the perfect plant for the holidays! Typically blooming in the winter, these plants have flat glossy green leaves tipped with large blooms of varying colours that are points of visual interest for days. There are several varieties sold as “Christmas Cactus” which are known by other names such as Thanksgiving Cactus, and Easter Cactus. They are all very similar, with the Thanksgiving vaierty being known as Zygocactus and having more jagged leaf patterns.

Care

General Maintenance:Repot your cactus once a year after they have finished flowering. When your plant has stopped flowering, keep it in a dark area for a majority of the day as this will potentially encourage a second bloom. Once it starts to bud, give it more light and start to fertilize for best results.

Temperature:Keep the temperature above 18 Celsius.

Light:Partial sun. Place in an east facing window so they receive some direct light throughout the day.

Watering:Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant is flowering. Mist occasionally. After the plant has finished flowering reduce watering slightly, allowing it to dry out a bit more between waterings.

Soil:Prefers a high quality soil that is rich in humus and other nutrients.

Fertilizer:Apply a high potassium fertilizer onceevery two weeks after buds have formed.
